I'm quite confused about serial numbers. The more I read the more confused I become. Is there anyone that can help me to decide the make model and year of my tractor? Here is the information I've gathered from what I believe to be a Farmall Super A. Written on the hydraulic case right side: 354352 786 MP Written on the block right side: FIRINC - ORD 1-3-4-2 4 251069B Written on Transmission rear upside down right side: IH-351687-RI Written on Transmission rear upside down right side: 4-8-9 Written on Gear Box right side: 3.15.S Written on Cultivator Assembly right side: 6530 DD Written on Governor Casing right side: 6340D L Written on Distributor Housing right side: 353898P Written on Engine Block left side: 258

This may be too obvious but have you checked under the seat on the torque tube/transmission housing for the original serial number data plate? That is the clearest and easiest path to determining the model year manufactured. Even if the data plate has all of the printing removed, the numbers are still stamped into the metal.

Thank you for the feedback. Yes. We checked everywhere and those were the numbers we could find. I'm going to go back out to the field and will let you know if there is anything else that I can find back there. If I find anything new I will post within the half-hour. Am I right in figuring that all the other numbers I've gathered are parts numbers for the individual pieces and that many various models could have been put together over the years since they work across models?

The numbers you posted are casting or part numbers.To help determine approximate year,there will be a number like this on major castings: *9-24-B*. That is a casting date code,meaning September 24,1956. The letter designates year.IH started with 'A' in 1931 .1939 uses 'I',count up from there. However 'V' was not used.So your 'A'/SA. could have a date code from 'I' (1939) to'Y'(1953). Info comes from a chart in Stiener's catalog.I cut it out and carry in my wallet.LOL

251069 is the serial# the rest are either cast codes or part#

IF there is not tag on the seat bracket, look on the flat spot below #1 cylinder on engine.

The 3.15.S on gearbox is date code. Meaning march 15,1949.So,unless the case has been changed in the last 68 years,your tractor is a 1949 model.

A few things probably misread: 251069B is almost certainly 251069R1 (part number) 4-8-9 is probably 4-8-S (April 8, 1949) Tractor is most likely a 1949 Super A.
